SPA 050 Social and Cultural Spanish: Food Traditions and Dining

Introduction to the Spanish language presented in the context of food traditions and dining. Includes food in the culture of Spanish speaking countries, language of groceries and ingredients, and conversation for dining

Performance Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Express in Spanish examples of foods of relevant countries and their ingredients.
  2. Participate in role playing regarding use of the Spanish language in grocery shopping, ingredients, and discussing preparation.
  3. Participate in a mock dining experience using appropriate words and phrases with both restaurant personnel and social companions.

SPA 051 Social and Cultural Spanish: Travel

Introduction to the Spanish language presented in the context of travel, from planning a trip to returning home. Includes travel in Spanish speaking countries, words and phrases related to transportation, conversation for hotels, restaurants, and tourist services, and language of health and hygiene.

Performance Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify the locations of Spanish speaking countries and their major cities.
  2. Demonstrate in Spanish how to order an airline ticket to travel to a specific city, make a rail reservation for travel to another city, and reserve a local rental car for a specific destination.
  3. Read in Spanish with accurate pronunciation a travel brochure featuring hotels, restaurants, and tours, including rates and "package deals."
  4. Participate in a mock emergency situation requiring an ambulance and the location of the nearest hospital.

SPA 052 Social and Cultural Spanish: Cinema

Viewing and discussing Spanish language films from regions throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Includes cinema of Spain, Cuba, Caribbean, South America, Mexico, and Central America. Also includes sociopolitical elements and cultural values of the regions expressed through films.

Performance Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Discuss the features and trends of films from Spain.
  2. Discuss the features and trends of films from Cuba and the Caribbean.
  3. Discuss the features and trends of films from South America.
  4. Discuss the features and trends of films from Mexico and Central America.
  5. Develop Spanish speaking and some writing skills through instructor-guided conversation and writing activities, centered around characters and plots, and investigate (in English) sociopolitical elements of 20th-century Spanish language cinema of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPA 055 Language Study and Travel in Spain, Italy, and France

Introduction to French, Italian, and Spanish language presented in the context of travel through these three countries. Includes travel in Spain, Italy, and France, lodging, money, and transportation terminology, culinary traditions, restaurants and markets, and travel destinations.

Information: Prior language knowledge is not required.

Information: Same as FRE 055 and ITA 055.

Performance Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify major cities and regions of Spain, Italy, and France.
  2. Participate in role playing dealing with traveling, hotels, car rentals, seasons and pricing, and the monetary system in each country.
  3. Describe culinary traditions of Italy, Spain, and France.
  4. Participate in a mock dining experience using appropriate terms with both restaurant personnel and social companions.
  5. Participate in a 17 day trip to Italy, France, and Spain.
